The worst clash happened at parklife this year, Justice & M.I.A.. I ended up seeing the start of Justice which was incredible besides the fact that every rookie dj now begins their set the same way, after that intro I went to see maya which was so much better than when I saw her at big day out a couple of years ago, then caught the end of Justice. Parklife was kinda a let down besides those 2.
I never quite understood Justice’s references to religion but it means this post suits christmas time. I copped the majority of radio 1’s essential mixes this year, I definatly come from a hip-hop background but I still love and appreciate house/electro/breaks music & love the energy it has especially when spun right. I thought the 2 best essential mixes this year were probably the most hated ones in Justice & Diplo hahaha, It was bound to happen, those two being a little obscure, I guess it sums up alot of euro dance music opinion If it has more than 5 words then its shit, what gets me is they love yoda, come on diplo owns yoda. I was going to post the tracks for the diplo essential mix but considering its Christmas Justice seemed to be the better option. I know there’s a couple missing I might post them later on when I have some time but for now there’s a ton of good tracks in here. It’s the time of year for giving so. Merry Christmas!!!!

They wander in and out, back and forward. Wavering. Years ago,?Weeks ago… he’s had a few birthdays. Always been old though, even when he was twenty you could see grey in his?eyes, hear dust on his voice)

The first Waits song I liked was Ol’ 55, off his first album, Closing Time. Nice song. Never really grabbed me though. It wasn’t until I glimpsed the Island years, when i heard the deep-night swing and the lonely craziness of Rain Dogs…my heart is in my shoes…?And the clock ticks out like a dripping faucet?’til you’re full of rag water and bitters and blue ruin?and you spill out over the side to anyone who will listen…?At the first time I heard it, I was thinking Well I can’t even imagine songs like this, where else would I have ever found this kinda stuff?
Where does that voice come from?
First impressions of Waits voice are all about the novelty. It’s as deep and gravelly as humanly possible (unless you’re a tuva throat singer) and he wields it like he’s ready to smash a whisky bottle on your head. At first, it feels as if the voice is a likeable crutch or a peg leg. It adds character but it can’t really stand up on it’s own or do anything better than a normal leg.
But once you get familiar with the entire Waits oeuvre, familiar with everything laid out on the table, you’ll understand how that voice can do just about anything. High, spineless, and raspy on tracks like Temptation, and all rage and rampage on Hoist that Rag. It’s all Vegas Showroom(Straight to the top), grunting maniac(Kommienezuspadt), otherworldly(Innocent when you dream), screeching death(Earth died screaming), dark and whispery(The ocean doesn’t want me today), topped with a provocative smoky grin. Tom’s voice puts the swipe in your swagger, the sneer in you ear, the glut back in your strut, the lazy all hazy, the style in your guile, four-fifty in your pocket and two steps from the moon.

Off Frank’s Wild Years. Use to be my favourite lp was Rain Dogs, on account of all that variety; midget gamblers on Singaporean wharfs, lonely birds with houses on fire, walking Spanish, Blue Ruin, whole towns made of Iron ore. Plus it had the best album cover, an Anders Peterson photo of a tattooed sailor sleeping on the shoulders of a large laughing lady. (I’ve included an Anders Peterson photo with this post.)Lately, though, I’ve been digging Frank’s wild years. It’s kind of a soundtrack to this play Waits wrote with his wife, Kathleen Brennan. Frank’s first mention is on a previous album, Swordfishtrombones, on a song called Frank’s Wild Years, which, ironically, doesn’t appear on the album Frank’s Wild Years. This song here, More Than Rain, is whispery, carnivalesque, and has an accordion.

Daft Punk were amazing on Sunday, it actually felt surreal seeing them up in the pyramid after all the anticipation I’d built up. It’s been on the things to do list for a long time and I was about to travel and pay a lot of money to see them before it was too late. Unbelievable they came to Perth which seems like everybody is dropping through now, not like a few years ago when artists would only do the east coast. Even though I’d heard all the bootlegs, youtube videos and the alive album it was still ridiculous, definatly wasn’t disappointed, unlucky for the people who didn’t experience it. It feels like I need to see them again, somewhere else though. Hopefully they tour again probably with a new show. I did get there pretty much just as they started and the spot I managed to get to there was no way I was moving from so all my photos look pretty much the same.
Also I’ve got a good friend and awesome DJ, Thirteen to contribute cause I obviously don’t post enough. He’ll be throwin up more houseier stuff which I cant wait to hear. make sure you check it out.

To celebrate the arrival of Daft Punk i thought id up one of my own edits. It sounds almost identical to the original i just added in some extra bass, and layered the drums a little more. Honestly the original is perfect as is so why mess with it.

Double D’s; Sam (Damn 28’s) & I djayed at shape last saturday night and I ended up recording most of it. Some of the levels are messed up and a bit of clipping going on but it’s live so unlucky.
I’m not sure what sorta style you would call it when anyone asks me what sorta music do you play I normally just say Ghetto Dance or Gangsta House, its somewhere between there. I’ve always been shit at classifying things though. Hopefully some people will get into it!
Shape is a new club at 237 Hay st East Perth, 2 weeks deep and looks like it will be off the hook week in week out. Look out next week for Van She, Plug in City on Sat & Caspa & James Curd on Fri.
